Caribana Blues: 5 Caribbean Restaurants in TORONTO to cheer you up

I’m sad to say Caribana (now known as Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival) has come and gone. For those of you who don’t know, this is one of the largest street festivals in North America. Tourists from all over the world come to take part in the festivities which include a huge Carnival parade at the beginning of August each year. Now that the Feathers are gone, concerts have passed and tourists have cleared out you may be feeling the Caribana blues. In case you are suffering from withdrawal or missed out on BlackFoodie’s Guide, I’ve highlighted my top picks and why. So if you’re visiting Toronto and want a taste of the Caribbean or you live in the 6 and want to know where to go check it out:

BlackFoodieCaribana

Simone’s Caribbean Restaurant

596 Danforth Ave .
JamaicanFood

Simone’s is definitely one of my favorite Jamaican restaurants. Located in the Greek area of Toronto it’s a nice Caribbean surprise and change in flavor. Although I love the jerk chicken here, my favorite items on the menu are the Codfish fritters and Barbecue chicken with rice and peas and coleslaw.

*Tip: This place is perfect for lunch with friends. If it’s warm outside ask to go the back patio- it’s great!

One Love Vegetarian

854 Bathurst st.

Roti

One Love Vegetarian has some of the best roti I’ve ever tried! It’s definitely not traditional cuisine but their twist on roti, bbq tofu and corn soup are worth the trip!  You may be thinking, hmmm… I’m not vegetarian- Before you finish that thought let me explain.  I’m not a vegetarian either but I found the food was so delicious and filling you won’t feel like your missing anything!

*Tip: Try the hot sauce! This is a take out spot with limited seating-it’s located right outside of Bathurst station so you can pop in and out easily!

Caribbean Roti Palace

744 Bathurst St,

DoublesTrini

Yes, I’ve included another Roti spot BUT what I recommend here are the doubles! For all my non  Trini readers who don’t know what that is, it’s a vegetarian piece of heaven! It is channa (curried chick peas) wrapped in two pieces of a light fried bread, topped with tamarind sauce and hot sauce if you’re like me. It’s not only delicious, it’s also super cheap!

*Tip: Perfect on the Go snack, it’s also located right outside of Bathurst Station, so you can hop off the train for a quick snack!

La Creole

810 St Clair Ave W

Haitianfood-LaCreole

If you’re looking for Haitian cuisine in Toronto you can find it here. This is great for a nice sit down dinner, they even feature live music on special nights. My favorite thing on the menu are the savoury beignets!

Patty Express

4 Elm St

PattyExpress

Okay so this isn’t really a restaurant but it is a great take out patty spot! Patties are the perfect treat! These patties are flaky and filled with either beef, veggies or chicken. Patty Express is located nearby the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto so if you need a quick and delicious snack while shopping, this is the place to go! I suggest the spicy beef patty!
